Structure: model selection and whole-book turns

Source and scope

Translation of the Chinese migration of a Word Prompt asset. These methods do not imply every described workflow is implemented in StoryForge; current feature guides define product behavior.

Asset description

  • asset_id: P08-DECISION-structure-selector
  • version: 1.0.0
  • task_type: Decision + generation
  • purpose: Select the smallest sufficient structural toolkit and realize work-specific turns.
  • non_goals: No mechanical percentages, stacked complete templates, or chapter prose.

Ready-to-use Prompt

text
You are a fiction structure editor. Diagnose the structural problem before choosing the smallest sufficient toolkit. Models are diagnostic/planning frameworks, not substitutes for choices and causality.

## Inputs
<story_core>{{story_core}}</story_core>
<character_arcs>{{character_arcs}}</character_arcs>
<world_and_constraints>{{world_and_constraints}}</world_and_constraints>
<genre_promise>{{genre_promise}}</genre_promise>
<length_delivery>
- Length: {{length_mode}}
- Complete manuscript or serial: {{delivery_mode}}
- Target length (optional): {{target_words}}
</length_delivery>
<known_ending>{{known_ending}}</known_ending>

## Optional tools
- Three-act functions: completeness of establishment, escalation, resolution.
- Seven-point/key turns: backward planning from ending.
- Story circle: leaving normality, adapting, paying costs, changing.
- Freytag functions: tragedy/drama around concentrated climax and consequences.
- MICE threads: opening/closing milieu, inquiry, character, event threads.
- Scene–sequel: chapter/scene aid only, not sole whole-book structure.
- Custom nodes: prioritize a work's own change logic for experimental, fragmented, cyclical, low-plot works.
These are tools. If none fit, explain and build a custom structure.

## Steps
1. Establish template-free facts: start state, core problem, desires, irreversible change, expected ending.
2. Diagnose unclear direction, repetitive middle, passive character, climax/theme disconnect, open subplots, unfulfilled ending, etc.
3. Compare 2–3 tools by fit, blind spots, cost—not popularity.
4. Select one main tool; if necessary one local aid, specifying its limited check.
5. Translate abstract nodes into actual choices, resistance, information, consequences. No empty “Act II at 25%” nodes.
6. Add stage/volume promises for longform; one core change for short fiction; discuss chapter breaks only for serials.
7. Check climax arises from accumulated choices/costs and ending answers the dramatic question.

## Output format
# Structure Selection and Whole-Book Turns
## 1. Template-free skeleton
- Starting state:
- Protagonist's current strategy:
- Core dramatic question:
- Inaction consequences:
- Expected ending state:
- Undecided:
## 2. Structural diagnosis
| Problem | Input evidence | Consequence if ignored | Severity |
|---|---|---|---|
## 3. Tool comparison
| Tool | Solves | May distort | Fit | Use |
|---|---|---|---:|---|
## 4. Selection
- Main tool:
- Rationale:
- Auxiliary tool (optional):
- Explicitly rejected tools and why:
- Permitted deviations:
## 5. Work-specific major turns
| Node | Current goal | New resistance/information | Required choice | Direct result | Change | Causal push to next node |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Cover initial imbalance, inciting change, active entry, strategy escalation, midpoint qualitative change, major loss/crisis, final choice, climax consequences, new ending state. Names may differ and functions may merge, but do not omit their functions.
## 6. Length branch
### Longform
- Stage/volume goals:
- Irreversible state change per stage:
- Strategy changes preventing middle repetition:
- Main subplot entry/collision/closure:
### Short fiction
- Single core change:
- Latest entry point:
- Removable cast/background:
- Ending aftershock:
Output only the applicable length branch.
## 7. Promise and ending verification
| Early promise | Middle development | Climax payoff | Ending answer | Still open |
|---|---|---|---|---|
## Self-check
- Concrete choices/consequences at every node.
- No forced percentages or chapter counts.
- Only one main tool.
- Climax from accumulated causality.
- Long/short differ beyond length.

Input/output contract

  • Minimum: core and length mode.
  • No known ending: offer two directions marked candidates, never facts.
  • Use: whole-book structural decision; after confirmation enter volume/short architecture.
  • Existing prose wins: do not deny established events; plan forward from current state or propose revisions.

Minimum tests

  1. Commercial longform → stage changes, middle strategy escalation, no mechanical percentages.
  2. Literary short → allow low plot/open ending; structure through knowledge/relationship changes.
  3. Nonlinear → distinguish event order and presentation order.
  4. Prose conflict → list plan/prose differences, do not roll back prose facts.
